Edge City History
Our Story

A Five Points Institution

Edge City was founded in 1970 by three Southside Junior High School teachers as an unabashed head shop in the heart of Jacksonville's Five Points neighborhood. In 1975, Gunnel Humphreys and her late husband Tom McCleery took over the store, transforming it into the cultural institution it is today.

For nearly five decades under Gunnel's stewardship, Edge City became known as the "patron saint of Five Points." Her neon pink hair and bold personal style became synonymous with the store's identity—a beacon of individuality in a world of conformity.

In October 2023, Gunnel passed the torch to longtime customer Cheryl Croft and her daughter Laura Croft, who took over operations in January 2024. The store continues to operate at its original 1017 Park Street location, carrying on the legacy of curated fashion and personal service that has defined Edge City for over 50 years.
